Bitcoin mining is the process that verifies transactions and adds them to the blockchain, while also introducing new bitcoin into circulation. It's a core part of how Bitcoin functions without a central authority.
Solving the puzzle
Miners use specialised computer hardware to compete in solving a complex mathematical puzzle. This system, known as proof of work, requires enormous computing power and trial and error rather than clever shortcuts. The first miner to solve the puzzle gets to add the next "block" of verified transactions to the chain and is rewarded with newly created bitcoin plus any transaction fees included in that block.
Because thousands of miners worldwide are competing simultaneously, the network adjusts the puzzle's difficulty periodically so that, on average, a new block is added at a fairly steady pace.
Why mining matters
Mining serves two purposes at once: it confirms that transactions are valid and prevents the same bitcoin from being spent twice, and it distributes new coins into the system in a predictable, gradually slowing way. This dual role is what allows Bitcoin to operate as a decentralised currency, with no bank or company needed to approve transactions.
The energy question
Because proof of work depends on raw computing power, mining consumes significant amounts of electricity, which has made its environmental impact a widely discussed topic. Some mining operations seek out renewable or otherwise lower-cost energy sources to manage this, though practices vary considerably by location and operator.
