Decentralised finance, usually shortened to DeFi, describes a set of financial applications built on blockchain networks rather than run by a bank or a single company. The stated goal is to let people borrow, lend, trade or earn on their assets through code-based agreements, known as smart contracts, instead of going through a traditional financial institution. It is one of the more technical corners of crypto, and it carries risks that are different from, and often larger than, traditional finance.

How DeFi is meant to work

Instead of a bank matching savers with borrowers, DeFi platforms use smart contracts, self-executing pieces of code stored on a blockchain, to automate that matching. For example, a lending protocol might let one person deposit crypto assets so others can borrow them, with interest rates set automatically based on supply and demand rather than by a bank committee. Because the blockchain records everything, transactions are generally visible to anyone who looks, though the people behind them are usually pseudonymous.

What makes DeFi different from traditional finance

A few features set DeFi apart:

The risks are real and worth taking seriously

DeFi platforms can contain coding errors or be exploited by attackers, and funds lost this way are frequently unrecoverable. Asset values in crypto markets can swing sharply and returns are never guaranteed. Because oversight varies enormously between platforms and jurisdictions, the consumer protections common in traditional banking often do not apply in the same way.

DeFi is a genuinely different way of thinking about financial infrastructure, built on open code rather than institutions, but it remains an experimental and higher-risk area. Nothing here is investment advice; if you are curious about DeFi, treat it as a topic to research carefully and cautiously, understanding that you could lose some or all of what you put in.
